Sportscaster Butch Maniego dies

Veteran sports commentator, writer and journalist Butch Maniego died on Sunday due to cardiac arrest. He was 50.


At 5 p.m. on Sunday, Mr. Maniego's ling time friend Noel Zarate broke the news that he was taken to the Philippine Heaart Center for an emergency treatment. Hours later the thanked Maniego for the support and revealed that he he passed away.

Maniego has been on his bed before he died. But, about three weeks ago, through his Twitter account he said that people can expect him to fully recover from his diabetes in about 2 months.  

In 1989, Maniego got his first break as an analyst covering the Philippine Basketball association (PBA). Later, he did TV commentary for the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) and became the Executive Director of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) during the time of commissioner Chito Trinidad. He also worked for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games on Studio 23 until last year.

Currently, he is the Executive director of the PBA Developmental League (D-League) and a columnist for a sports website spin.ph.
